Dubrovnik Review – A Memorable, Rainy Adventure
Updated: Jan 26

My wife and I visited Dubrovnik in May 2023 and stayed for three days within the city walls, near the Buza Gate. Our accommodation was small and felt a bit like a cave, which was charming in its own way, though it may not suit everyone. There were plenty of stairs, which didn’t bother us, but if you have difficulty walking, this probably isn’t the ideal spot for you.
The city itself is incredibly picturesque, with winding alleyways, beautiful old buildings, and stunning views from nearly every corner.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t perfect during our trip. It rained for half of our stay, which did put a bit of a damper on some of our plans. However, we didn’t let that stop us from exploring the Old Town, and we still had a wonderful time taking in the sights despite the rain.
One thing we noticed was that Dubrovnik is quite expensive, with a large beer setting us back around 8 euros and cocktails costing about 15 euros. Prices like these are worth considering, especially if you’re planning to spend a lot of time in the Old Town.

On our second-to-last day, we decided to head to the rocks at Plaza Dance Beach, just west of the Pile Gate. We found the area to be really lovely, and if we return to Dubrovnik, we’d probably stay around here next time. The only downside was that there were quite a few jellyfish in the water, and I ended up getting stung. Thankfully, we were able to make the best of it by heading to the nearby Plaza Banje, where there were fewer jellyfish. We spent some time in the sea and then enjoyed cocktails and snacks at the Banje Beach Bar, which was a highlight of the trip. The setting was perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
For our evening meal, we went to Bistro Tavulin, and I have to say, the food was absolutely excellent! The atmosphere was charming, and the meal was a perfect end to the day.
Overall, we had a fantastic time in Dubrovnik and would love to return. The only thing that slightly affected our experience was the rain, but we still made the most of our time there. Next time, we’d love to take a boat trip to the Blue Cave, something we missed out on this time due to the weather.
Would we return? Absolutely. Dubrovnik is beautiful, and despite the rain and a few minor setbacks, it left a lasting impression on us. We’ll be back one day!
